Phantom HS - Hollister, Ca March 20, 2009

March 23rd, 2009

What a killer day for racing! and it helps that I love to ride the Hollister events! Us ladies raced at 1:30 in row 12. There were 13 rows of C riders in our race which totaled over 300 racers in one race! Crazy! So, 12 gunshots into the race……off I went! There were 4 ladies in my race: Andrea Knipe, Jocelyn Snow, Darlene Sumrall and Djay. Around the 1st corner I made it into 1st position! Off into the trail’s I went…off from spectators view. The singletrack was so much fun! The dirt was still nice and wet which made the traction perfect! I caught up to the C women row and did my best to pass a few of them….I went down on one turn trying to pass a rider and fell HARD! I got up as quick as possible trying not to lose my 1st place position and started making many other passes. I felt great and had a good rythum going. I started going uphilland turned right and saw a HUGE traffic jam (aka, bottleneck) There must have been 75 riders parked waiting for some fallen riders going up a long hill!!!!! I couldnt get around any of them so I too had to stop and wait. Off went the goggles and soon after that I had to turn my engine off because I was overheating!! smoke everywhere! The other Vet ladies pulled up a few riders behind me…..so as soon as I found an oppertunity I squeezed my way into the traffic and got up the hill thru the jam! off I went again! Thru the first check, the sign said ” 407y Vet Woman 1st Place”!! so, out I went for lap 2! I got thru the tree’s, rocks, creeks and the hillclimbs great this time! no traffic! I rounded a corner near the finish and I blew past the turn and had to turn around to get back onto the trail…..and WHAM, another rider hit the back of me and we both went down. MY bike pinned me to the ground! A sweeper was close by and he helped me get my bike off my legs. THANK GOODNESS for him! I hopped back on and was still in first, phew!!!! That checkered flag was a blessing! An hour and a half was plenty! Winning was sure a rush! I had a blast! It’s now Sunday and boy am I SORE today! Thank you god for keeping me safe, once again.
